Inherited Fire is the third piece I’ve created for Dr. Stephanie Reyes. Usually I’ve written the text for the pieces I’ve written for them, so I found this piece a bit extra special when Stephanie asked me to set a poem they themself wrote this time around. Something about using their words this time around makes this piece feel a bit more personal to me. It really made the topic of collective grief while also standing together in the face of environmental destruction and inherited violence that more powerful.
